Manuel Baca is Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Management, and Business Law at Rio Hondo College and Lecturer of Higher Education (EdD Program) for the Charter College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles. As a long-time resident of the San Gabriel Valley, he has been a member of and worked with numerous civic organizations. He is an alum of Rio Hondo College, California State University, Fullerton, and the University of Southern California (where he earned a PhD). His military service was with the United States Marine Corps, receiving an Honorable Discharge (Sergeant E-5). He has held leadership roles with the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, Mt. SAC, the Foundation for California Community Colleges, Rio Hondo College, civic organizations, and community-based, non-profits. His son, Paul, also a Marine veteran, is an employee of Space X and his grandson, Noah, is a third-year student at Boise State University. Manuel is married to Gloria Sanchez Baca, an interior designer.
Locally, Baca has worked with numerous civic organizations throughout the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. He founded, as principal donor, the Kepler Scholarship Program which provides mentorships and awards scholarships to Mt. SAC students majoring in the sciences and teacher education. Kepler includes outreach to students attending Pomona USD and Walnut USD. Baca is on the executive board of the Foundation for the California Community Colleges where he served as Executive Board Chair (2018-20). The Foundation, among its many programs and services, has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships to low-income students.
Currently, Baca’s highest priority is ensuring a safe campus learning environment for all students and staff. He continues his advocacy work in support of gender/racial equity, educational access, and social justice.
